From a young age, Jesse had always been interested in business. Growing up in Alberta, Canada, Jesse was a good student. Before he even graduated high school, he began selling many of the books that he had read on the internet. He realized that there was an opportunity to explore and exploit a potential market gap by purchasing books overseas, and then reselling them in America at lower prices than mainstream book retailers on the web. By just 16 years old, he took what he had learned from his bookselling venture and brought it into the world of computer software. Just one year later, he decided to quit school and continue to pursue his passions as a business owner and entrepreneur by selling products online.
The Beginnings
eDirect was Jesse’s first official business. Essentially, the company was a software retailer that sold software applications and licenses online. In fact, it was one of the largest resellers of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Word, and Adobe Photoshop. To turn a profit and generate revenue, Jesse developed a unique strategy where they would give consumers discounts by purchasing the software first from different countries where the retail prices were cheaper. When they would resell the licenses to consumers in North America, they were able to do so at a discount, effectively undercutting big-name retailers at the price point and generating more than $40 million in software sales.
Once Jesse determined just how successful this business model could be, he expanded eDirect and made it easier for students to acquire the software applications that they required for school. They began offering academic discounts to students and capitalized on leveraging large corporate discounts to provide maximum savings.
After eDirect, Jesse went on a serial entrepreneurial spree, founding 22 multimillion dollar supplement companies between 2007 and 2011, with these brands earning a profit of more than $500 in sales. These companies sold products like diet teas, acai berries, teeth whitening products, and more. Throughout this massive undertaking, Jesse developed the marketing strategies for each of these brands, implementing a pay-per-click advertising campaign that helped to amass nearly half a billion dollars in sales.
WuYi Tea was just one of the brands that Jesse founded during this time – and it was also one of the most successfully and popular of its time. As a tea brand, WuYi Tea was able to build up a massive following and a tremendous reputation as selling tasty, quality teas that people were willing to go out of their way to purchase. For instance, in just two years, the brand sold more than $100 million worth of tea between 2007 and 2009. The company became known as the #1 oolong tea retailer in the US. From there, Jesse founded Dazzle White, one of the most famous teeth whitening pen products available in the market. This company went on to generate $50 million in sales alone.
In 2010, Jesse went on to form two unique businesses – one of which would serve as the foundation for what would become his most successful companies in terms of scale, notoriety, and longevity. These new companies were more focused on the distribution of information, rather than a commodity.
Penguin Leads began as a company that wanted to enhance the public’s access to public information in an easy, affordable way. Penguin Leads was an aggregate of public records, property records, and background check websites that provided users with access to this information for a fee. Essentially, the platform was a pay per use platform, where users interested in accessing the records listed through the various websites under Penguin Leads would be required to pay a fee. From 2012 to 2018, the company generated $20 million in sales. Although Penguin Leads was short lived, this company and its business model provided Jesse with some much needed insight into how he could go about structuring his next endeavor.
Understanding that he had a real knack for digital marketing, Jesse decided to use some of the same strategies that he used as a health supplement retailer and apply them to an area that he was really passionate about – vehicles. Ever since he was a child, Jesse always had an interest in automobiles, and he knew that he would eventually start a business around his passion.
At the time, he was looking for a new venture after Penguin Leads and returned back to his roots to find some inspiration. In 2012, Car History Group came to fruition as a collection of car history websites using a model that was quite similar to the one he used for Penguin Leads. The purpose of these websites was to make it easier for interested buyers and car owners to learn the history of their vehicles either before purchases or after purchases. Through this single, intuitive platform, customers were able to search through VIN numbers, make and models, and year models to find public information related to their vehicle’s history.
More than 3 million monthly visitors continue to use Car History Group and their affiliate websites like vehiclehistory.com to search the history of their automobiles. With such a massive user base, Car History Group has become rather famous in the industry, and it’s received attention across a variety of publications, including USNews, Newsweek, Fox, Detroit News, and Digital Trends.
