Jesse Willms: Supporting The Edmonton Humane Society

Posted by Jesse Willms on November 23, 2010

I am very proud to support the Edmonton Humane Society and their good work in helping companion animals in our area. I’ve given them a $1,000 donation and plan to continue to find ways to support them in the future.

The Edmonton Humane Society is not affiliated with any other Humane Societies; all donations to them go directly to helping animals in Edmonton. These guys have been helping companion animals since 1907. They provide shelter for over 11,000 animals a year including dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, birds, rodents, reptiles and more.

As you know, I’m a big fan of doing things to help make local and global communities better places for everyone. Up until this point I’ve focused my efforts almost exclusively on helping people. But, I realize that in being the caretakers of the world we have to share it with all other living creatures, and we owe it to ourselves to do what we can to help them live better lives as well.

The Edmonton Humane Society lives up to that mission with a wide variety of programs to help companion animals. They spay or neuter animals to prevent overpopulation. They have an animal foster care program that helps train animals with behavioral issues, so they can be returned to their family without causing stress in the household.

The group responds to reports of animals that have been abused, and steps in when needed to make sure that no companion animal needs to suffer through the indignity of cruelty or neglect. The society also takes in lost animals and does what it can to find their original caregivers.

Of course, one of their primary efforts is taking in stray animals and putting them up for adoption so they can live happy lives in loving homes. At any given time there are over 200 animals at their shelter waiting to be adopted. Until then, they are well cared for by the Edmonton Humane Society staff and are also spayed or neutered.

All in all they provide a valuable function in our society, and they deserve our support. Who doesn’t love animals? Whether it’s a dog that can be your loyal and devoted friend, a cat that can sit on your lap and let you know that you are loved or even a pot-bellied pig that can chill out with you, most of us have strong feelings about our companion animals. That’s why I’m supporting the Edmonton Humane Society and their noble efforts.
